Girls on the Rise

This is a literacy program targeting young girls in grades 3-5. This after-school program was established because research showed a drop in literacy rates amongst youth, especially our black youth, in the Etobicoke area. This program focuses on literacy through the use of The American Girl Dolls. Trust 15 Youth Community Support Organization has six different dolls, each unique culture and story. For six weeks, the young girls have the opportunity to read through one of the dolls stories, along with completing worksheets that focus on literacy and comprehension. This interactive method, along with the bond the young girls create with each story, helps inspire the students to learn in a creative and fun environment. Our mission for this program is to reach out to the young girls in our community and encourage them to develop a passion and love for reading.
